Suffering, failing and hardships are all negative things. However all these things can really teach us something if we stop to look through it all, we truly learn something useful, or even gain insight in some way.
The quote is an analogy, the darkness is oppression/hardship, and most of us have some form of hardships that torment us. The stars are the insights and ways we can develop as a person (in a positive way) from the suffering, and grow stronger as a result.
Its like working out, (To an extent) if your body never strains, than it will not become stronger, your body will stay weak. But if you push it, than it will develop and your body will be able to lift heavier loads.
